Elle Magazine called him “The Prince of Prints”. Born in the South of France, Daniel Venissac had three career choices: goat cheese farmer, professional rugby player or lavender grower. However, after three years in Central and South America, Daniel saw an opportunity to bring native South American clothing to the beachgoers in Saint Tropez. A career in fashion was born.
In the late ‘70s Daniel discovered the world of vintage clothing. He opened a store in Corsica where he became known for transforming vintage pieces into new works of wearable art. It was there he met the now-famed costume designer Phillipe Guillotel. Together, the designers launched an innovative modern collection in Paris called Kryptal. Daniel and Phillipe created an unforgettable line using graffiti painted Tyvek paper, parachute silk, transparent plastic and rubber.
When Daniel moved to New York in the early ‘80s, he brought with him a love for color, prints and a curious passion for rare and unique materials. In its earliest stage the Cocorico line for men and women was based on European vintage fabrics and curtains from the 50s and 60s. It evolved into a complete winter and summer collection in new materials, featured in Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour and Details.
New York was ready for Daniel Venissac. Cocorico was an immediate success at Charivari, Henri Bendel, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Daniel’s own store in SoHo. Internationally, the collection was so popular in Japan that Daniel opened a permanent showroom in Tokyo (he is still until now well represented overthere).
In 1992 Daniel left New York for a much-need break in Hawaii. But he soon returned to the recycling business, designing the first line for Killiwatch in Paris. The following year, Daniel moved to Miami to start his next collection. Remake transformed vintage pieces into new and original designs for Fred Segal, Patricia Fields, and American Rags.
It was time to put his name behind his designs, starting with a men’s collection. VENISSAC began in 1998 as a line of Guayaberas - traditional Cuban men’s shirts - in materials never used before. It has evolved into a complete collection of lightweight tunics and shirts with a tropical feel. Daniel describes himself as Artisan de l'elegance Tropicale. VENISSAC is summer, comfort and style.
“I wanted to create the feeling you get when you step off a plane from a cold place and put on summer clothing for the first time… that sense of lightness that defines the tropical experience.”
Today the casual-hip look of VENISSAC is showing up in all the right places, from Japan to the US, and on internationally renowned musicians and artists.
His signature shop, VENISSAC, off Lincoln Road in Miami Beach captures the essence of his collection and is a must-visit for anyone seeking clothing that is original, worldly, comfortable and stylish – and very Tropicool.
